Description

1859-C Half Eagle, MS62
The Sole Finest With CAC Approval

1859-C $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Winter-1. Among Charlotte half eagles, the 1859-C is relatively scarce, with likely fewer than 225 pieces extant, according to Doug Winter. He further calls Mint State examples "extremely rare." The present piece is indeed a condition rarity, and within the Condition Census for the issue. It is also the sole finest coin with CAC endorsement. Save for some softness on the border stars, the coin is well struck and yields warm honey-gold color with satiny mint luster. Minimal abrasions prevent an even finer grade. The eagle on the reverse is somewhat "fuzzy" in appearance due to an improperly annealed die. Both 1859-C varieties use this reverse. Population: 2 in 62 (1 in 62+), 3 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P4)
