1859-D Half Eagle, XF45
Rare Large D Variety
1859-D $5 Large D XF45 NGC. Winter 45-EE. The mintmark is
large and tilted right on this rare variety, which uses the same
obverse die as the typically seen Medium D coin. PCGS and NGC
combined report only eight attributed Large D examples of this
issue, although additional pieces -- the present coin among them --
are unattributed for their mintmark size. We have seen a Large D
coin on only eight prior occasions since 1993. This Choice XF
example displays bright straw-gold patina with hints of field
luster. Slight strike softness is evident on the hair curls around
Liberty's face and on the eagle's neck, but otherwise the
definition is pleasing. Only small, unobtrusive marks are
