Strong For a D-Mint Coin

1859-D $5 Medium D AU58 ANACS. Variety 44-HH. Examples of the 1859-D are rarely seen in AU58 condition. Only 10,366 coins were struck, and Winter estimates at most 225 pieces survive. The vast majority are offered in the range of XF40 to AU53. The slightest trace of softness occurs over exceedingly strong devices for a Dahlonega Mint coin. Deep yellow-gold surfaces maintain luster around the border elements and show minor wispy abrasions.(Registry values: P3)
