Description
1859-D Liberty Five, MS61
Important Condition Rarity
1859-D $5 Medium D MS61 PCGS. Winter 44-HH. The 1859-D has
one of the lowest mintages among all Dahlonega Mint half eagles --
only 10,366 pieces were struck. The issue is rare in any grade,
with most examples grading Very Fine to About Uncirculated. Mint
State examples are extremely rare -- PCGS has certified only 14
coins in all Uncirculated grades combined (1/25). While the Medium
D variety is more available in Mint State than its Large D
counterpart (just two Uncirculated Large D pieces exist), Mint
State examples remain challenging regardless of variety. This MS61
example displays bright, semireflective fields over both sides,
each of which show rich, reddish-gold color. The central areas and
peripheral stars are softly struck, a usual characteristic of this
Dahlonega issue. A few shallow field marks apparently account for
the grade, which might be conservative. Population: 5 in 61, 9
finer (12/24).Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 1569; Pittsburgh Signature (Heritage, 10/2011), lot 4924. (Registry values: P3)
