Description
1859-D Medium D Five, Exceptional MS62
Second-Lowest Dahlonega Mintage
1859-D $5 Medium D MS62 NGC. Variety 44-HH (formerly 36-CC).
The ball of the 5 in the date centered between two denticles
attributes this more common variety. The 1859-D has the second
lowest mintage (10,366 pieces) of all Dahlonega Mint half eagles,
trailing the 1861-D with 1,597 pieces. NGC has graded 109 1859-Ds,
mostly in Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated grades. This
service has seen just 12 Mint State coins, the finest an MS65.Our MS62 offering displays lustrous yellow-gold surfaces and well-struck design elements, including all star centers and Liberty's hair curls, elements that tend to be weak. The reverse shield is better-struck than normal, though its right edge is soft. The feathers on the eagle's right (facing) leg and those on the arrows are weak, as typically seen. Some light marks are fewer than what might be expected for an MS62. Moreover, these are nowhere as severe as typically found on this heavily abraded issue. We mention a linear mark to the lower right of star 5 solely for pedigree purposes. It is significant that there is virtually no mint-made roughness in the fields of this coin, a characteristic that plagues many surviving examples. As expected from the foregoing attributes, this coin yields much better eye appeal than ordinarily seen on the issue. Census: 3 in 62, 5 finer (11/13).
