Description

1859-D Half Eagle, XF45
Medium D, Original Coloration

1859-D $5 Medium D XF45 PCGS. Variety 44-HH. Medium D mintmark. Aside from the rare 1861-D half eagle, the 1859-D is the lowest-mintage issue of the Dahlonega fives. Just 175 to 225 pieces survive, according to Doug Winter's estimate. This example exudes originality, displaying medium green-gold color with faint traces of golden mint luster around the raised elements. Some deep build-up exists in the recesses. Softly struck at the centers (as are all of the 1859-D coins), yet the surfaces are remarkably free of abrasions and the planchet quality is far above average. Housed in an old green label holder.
