Description

Low-Mintage 1859-S Five Dollar, AU55
High-Quality Early S-Mint Coin

1859-S $5 AU55 NGC. Most of the small mintage--13,220 coins--of 1859-S half eagles circulated, and the average certified survivor grades only XF or thereabouts. This Choice AU example is one of seven such at NGC, with eight finer (6/10). The reddish-gold surfaces show most of the original luster remaining, with a sharp strike and no singular abrasions. Although the San Francisco Mint had officially been in operation for only five years, they clearly knew how to produce high-quality coinage.(Registry values: P8)
