Description

1860-D Medium Mintmark Five, AU53
Attractive for the Grade

1860-D $5 Medium D AU53 NGC. CAC. Variety 38-FF. The 1860-D is actually one of the more available D-mint fives in spite of a low mintage of only 14,365 pieces. Of the 145-165 pieces believed known in all grades, it is estimated that 38-42 coins are in AU condition. This is an attractive example for the grade. It is better struck than most D-mint fives, as one would expect from this issue. The surfaces are light reddish-brown with slight traces of luster still seen around the peripheral devices. Each side has a distinctive mark that readily identifies this piece: On the obverse a shallow, vertical mark is located in the field out from the mouth of Liberty, and on the reverse there is a light grease stain that was struck into the planchet at the time of manufacture that is seen above and below the eagle's left (facing) wing.(Registry values: P4)
