Description

1860-D Half Eagle, Medium D, MS61
Great-Looking, Razor-Sharp Example

1860-D $5 Medium D MS61 PCGS. Variety 46-GG. The pre-Civil War half eagle mintage at Dahlonega was 14,635 pieces, among the lower production totals for the denomination. This is a great-looking PCGS-certified example of this issue, showing golden-orange, flowing luster on each side, a razor-sharp strike, and a marked absence of mentionable abrasions. The tiny 1861-D production would mark the end of the series (and the mint). Population: 12 in 61, 15 finer (12/13). This piece and others similarly graded lie just outside the Condition Census for the issue.
