Description

1860-D Half Eagle, MS63
Medium D Mintmark, Few Are Finer

1860-D $5 Medium D MS63 NGC. Winter 46-GG. Doug Winter notes the 1860-D is not quite as rare as expected for its low 14,635-piece mintage, but it becomes scarce at the upper About Uncirculated grades and it is very rare in any Mint State grade -- especially at the Select Uncirculated level or finer. This splendid MS63 example displays remarkably smooth, light-orange surfaces and a sharp strike for an 1860-D. Minor weakness at the upper neck curl and the hair below the ear is balanced by bolder leg feathers than often seen for the date. As always, the eagle's neck feathers are weak. The stars are needle-sharp except for star 1, which lacks full central definition. Both the obverse and the reverse are free of all but a few tiny ticks and faint field lines. NGC Census: 2 in 63, 2 finer (8/25).(Registry values: P4)
