    Description

    1860-S Half Eagle, AU53
    Elusive San Francisco Issue

1860-S $5 AU53 NGC. The 1860-S had a low mintage of only 21,200 coins, and circulated heavily, with most pieces being well-worn or lost overtime. In fact, the date is significantly scarcer in all grades than the more popular and slightly lower-mintage Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of the same year. In Mint State this is especially prevalent, as the 1860-S is represented in this condition by just two coins (8/14), the finest of which is a PCGS MS62 example tracing its origin to the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. This luminous AU representative shows original orange-gold patina with remnants of soft luster in the protected regions of the fields. Grade-accompanying abrasions are light and evenly dispersed, leaving this piece with substantial eye appeal for the grade and issue. Census: 6 in 53, 18 finer (8/14).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25VJ, PCGS# 8287)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
