Description

1861 Half Eagle, MS64
Challenging Issue in High Grade

1861 $5 MS64 NGC. As the large business-strike mintage of 688,084 pieces would suggest, the 1861 Liberty half eagle is an available issue in most grades, making it a popular No Motto type coin. The issue is definitely elusive at the MS64 grade level, however, and finer coins are condition rarities. This impressive Choice specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements throughout and the lightly marked yellow-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster. Census: 26 in 64 (1 in 64+), 10 finer (6/23).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VK, PCGS# 8288, Greysheet# 8907)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
