Description
1861 Half Eagle, MS65
Only Nine Finer for the Type
1861 $5 MS65 NGC. The No Motto Liberty half eagles were
coined from 1839 to 1866, and they are rarely found in high grades.
For the entire type, NGC has only certified 45 examples as MS65
with just nine finer, and those are all MS66. Clearly the 1861 is
the most plentiful date in high grade, yet only nine MS65 examples
and two MS66 pieces have been certified at NGC (3/13). This lovely
Gem possesses brilliant light yellow luster with satin surfaces and
excellent design definition. It is essentially a fully struck
specimen with reflective fields that are nearly prooflike.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VK, PCGS# 8288, Greysheet# 8907)
Weight: 8.36 grams
