Description

1861 Half Eagle, Sparkling MS65
Few Finer Certified for the Type

1861 $5 MS65 PCGS. A jewelike Gem with splendid eye appeal. The 1861 half eagle is readily available up to Select Uncirculated, but becomes quite scarce in Gem or better. PCGS and NGC combined have graded fewer than two dozen examples MS65 or finer, putting pressure on high-grade specimens from type collectors who view the 1861 date as logical to fill the Type Two half eagle slot.

This excellent five has clean, semireflective fields with frosted devices. The obverse luster displays orange-gold toning and a suggestion of magenta approaching the rims. The reverse shows a light touch of planchet porosity above the eagle amid the lettering. The eagle is especially well struck and prominent on the semiprooflike surface. Multicolored toning is rich and beautiful with lilac accents complementing deep orange, red, and sun-yellow highlights. One of the finest Gem No Motto half eagles to be found. Population: 7 in 65, 1 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VK, PCGS# 8288, Greysheet# 8907)
