Description
1861-C Liberty Half Eagle, AU55
Last Charlotte Mint Issue
1861-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. The 1861-C Liberty half eagle
was the last issue produced at the Charlotte Mint, with a reported
mintage of 6,879 pieces. The last 887 examples were apparently
struck after the Confederacy seized the facility on April 20, 1861.
The surviving population numbers approximately 150-175 specimens in
all grades, with most examples seen in the VF-XF grade range. This attractive Choice AU piece displays just a trace of wear on the well-detailed design elements and the bright greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster. Only minor abrasions are evident and eye appeal is quite strong for the issue. Census: 19 in 55, 20 finer (7/13).(Registry values: P6)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VL, PCGS# 8289, Greysheet# 9037)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
