Description

1861-C Five Dollar, MS60
Variety 1, Die State III

1861-C $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 1. Die State III, with a die crack through the tops of AMERI. This is the latest die state, and might have been one of the 887 examples struck in the Charlotte mint while it under Confederate control, although there is no way to prove such a claim. Aside from a single MS63 example that appears in the population data for both NGC and PCGS, the few Mint State examples of this issue hover around the MS60 to MS61 level. NGC has certified one (the present piece) in MS60, five in MS61, and one in MS63. Perhaps as many as half a dozen different Mint State examples of this issue survive today. Although both sides exhibit myriad marks, there are none that stand out among the others. The surfaces have satiny yellow luster and the strike is typically sharp. Census: 1 in 60, 6 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P6)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VL, PCGS# 8289, Greysheet# 9037)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
