    Description

    1861-D Half Eagle, AU50
    Attractive and Relatively Well-Defined Example

1861-D $5 AU50 PCGS Secure. Variety 46-JJ. The 1861-D five dollar, with its strong Civil War connection, is ranked first among the 26 Dahlonega issues in overall rarity, and second in high grade rarity, according to Doug Winter. The paltry mintage of 1,597 pieces ensures the scarcity of the 1861-D, and few were set aside with only 18-21 pieces believed extant in AU. The surfaces are lightly peppered with small abrasions, but none are of singular consequence. The strike is a bit soft in the centers, but not as weak as often seen. The yellow-gold color is accented by deeper reddish accents surrounding the devices.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25VM, PCGS# 8290)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
