Description
1861-D Half Eagle, AU55
Lowest-Mintage Dahlonega Five
1861-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 46-JJ. This last-year
half eagle issue from Georgia's Dahlonega Mint would comprise only
1,597 coins, making it the rarest (and by far the lowest-mintage)
of all the D-mint fives. Doug Winter says the 1861-D "now ranks,
along with the 1861-D dollar, as the most popular issue from this
mint." This greenish-yellow piece shows good luster and scattered
marks, along with some strike softness on the lower eagle's claws
and fletchings on the reverse, as well as the upper stars on the
obverse. The obverse denticles are especially weak from 9:30 to 12
o'clock, and around the reverse from 12 to 4. Census: 7 in 55, 15
finer (3/14).(Registry values: P6)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VM, PCGS# 8290, Greysheet# 9038)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
