Description
Important 1861-D Half Eagle, AU Details
1861-D $5 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC. AU Details. Variety 39-EE. The mintage in 1861 was a mere 1,597 coins struck on U.S. government authority, plus a small additional number minted after the Confederate government took control of the facility. Unfortunately, it is impossible to distinguish between the two striking periods.Bright lemon-yellow surfaces are visible on both sides of this desirable Dahlonega Mint gold piece. The surfaces are lightly abraded with some heavier marks. There is little evidence of cleaning.
