Legendary 1861-D Half Eagle, Possible Confederate Striking

1861-D AU 55 NGC. Although superceded in high grade rarity by the 1842-D Large Date, the 1861-D is the most famous and coveted half eagle produced by the Georgia branch mint. On January 7, 1861, the Dahlonega Mint received two 1861 half eagle obverse dies from the Philadelphia Mint. Sometime between that date and April 8, 1861, Mint employees struck 1,597 pieces. On the latter date, rebel forces seized the facility and, sometime thereafter, an additional 1,000-2,000 coins were produced. Although numismatists are unable to conclusively distinguish between the Federal and Confederate strikings, the possibility of owning a rare Confederate issue accounts for the desirability of the 1861-D among advanced gold specialists. Typically struck for the issue, the surfaces do, however, display suitable definition on the central devices. Both sides show an even sandy-gold appearance with a few scattered, yet not individually distracting abrasions. This is a pleasing, lightly worn example and one of only seven or eight About Uncirculated examples believed extant today.
