Description
1861-S Half Eagle, AU53
Scarce San Francisco Issue
1861-S $5 AU53 NGC. The San Francisco Mint struck only
18,000 half eagles in 1861, all of which were dispersed into
circulation where they remained for use in Western commerce. Fewer
than 100 examples are believed to survive in all grades, with none
known in Mint State; the finest known examples are a handful of
AU58 pieces certified at NGC, and even the Smithsonian coin grades
just XF40, per Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. This AU example is
well-detailed, with bright bronze-gold surfaces that yield the
occasional glint of luster when rotated beneath a light. Census: 8
in 53, 12 finer (12/14).(Registry values: P8)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VN, PCGS# 8291, Greysheet# 9039)
Weight: 8.36 grams
