Description

1862 Half Eagle, AU58
Rare Any Finer

1862 $5 AU58 PCGS. Unsurprisingly for a coin of which only 4,430 business strikes were minted, this example of the 1862 half eagle shows much prooflike reflectivity on both sides. There are many minuscule abrasions, but none are distracting or easily visible without a loupe, save for a couple of ticks in the left obverse field and one in back of the eagle's neck. The surfaces display original orange-gold color, and the eye appeal is considerable. The Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia comments of this issue, "The date is rarer than most of the Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of the 1840s and 1850s. Only about two dozen 1862 half eagles have crossed the auction block in the last two decades. Mint State examples of the date are very rare and underrated ... " This coin represents an important opportunity for the specialist, as another piece of equal quality and eye appeal might take many years to surface. Population: 9 in 58 (2 in 58+), 4 finer (11/21).
