Description

1863 Half Eagle, AU53
Only 30 to 40 Pieces Known

1863 $5 AU53 NGC. The 1863 Liberty half eagle is one of the rarest issues in the entire series, including all mints. Only 2,442 pieces were struck, most of which were lost to attrition. Today, only 30 to 40 pieces survive, according to PCGS. However, the issue gets much less attention than the more exotic mintmarked issues from the Southern mints. Since our Permanent Auction Archives began in 1993, we have seen an 1863 half eagle on only 25 occasions. Of those, nine were for Details coins with various impairments. Most recently, an AU55 PCGS coin in our May 2023 Central States Signature realized $37,200.

The current AU example displays excellent straw-gold patina with hints of luster and mild field chatter. A light rim bump at star 6 serves as a pedigree marker. We have seen few examples of this issue as appealing. Census: 4 in 53, 10 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P8)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VS, PCGS# 8294, Greysheet# 8909)

Weight: 8.36 grams
