Description

1863 Half Eagle, AU55
Rare Low-Mintage Issue

1863 $5 AU55 NGC. The half eagle mintage of just 2,442 business strikes at the Philadelphia Mint in 1863 was one of the lowest of all time. A major rarity, there have been just three examples of this issue rated in mint condition: one at PCGS and two at NGC. AU coins are slightly more available but still very rare.

This Choice AU example has pleasing eye appeal, with light antique-gold toning and faint pink-rose accents near the peripheral devices. The design motifs are well-struck, with crisp detailing seen on Liberty's central hair curls and on the eagle's talons, wings, and neck feathers. Normal scattered marks from circulation and slight high-point rub are consistent with the grade. Census: 4 in 55, 7 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P8)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VS, PCGS# 8294, Greysheet# 8909)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
