Description

1863 Half Eagle, Exemplary AU58
Rare and Reflective

1863 $5 AU58 PCGS. This mid-Civil War-issue half eagle was struck in a skimpy amount of only 2,442 examples for circulation plus 30 proofs. Given such a low total emission, this scarcely circulated coin's surfaces logically show much prooflike reflectiveness remaining throughout both sides. The appealing reddish-gold fields contrast against slightly different-colored devices. The bold strike is exemplary, and the few scattered ticks are not only minor but largely removed from the device high points. The average grade of survivors of this rare issue is no more than AU50, placing this near-Mint State piece among the top ranks of survivors at both services. Mint State examples exist but are seldom seen. The last example in this grade and service that we offered was lot 6708 in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), which brought $30,550. Population: 4 in 58, 2 finer (7/16).
