Description

1863 Five Dollar, AU58+
Only 30 to 40 Survivors
Among the Finest Certified

1863 $5 AU58+ PCGS Secure. This is one of the top 10 most elusive Liberty Head half eagles in the entire series. The Mint accomplished a token production of 2,442 coins, and virtually all of them have been lost to time. PCGS estimates a survivorship of 30 to 40 examples across all grade levels. Of those, perhaps one or two are in Mint State. This AU58+ half eagle follows behind them as one of the finest examples the series specialist can hope to obtain.

Orange-gold surfaces display semiprooflike reflectivity that is unsurprising for such a low-mintage issue. Every coin was essentially a "first strike." Each side features complete design detail that adds to the appeal. This piece falls fractionally shy of an extremely rare Mint State designation, according to PCGS. However, signs of friction are practically indiscernible even under close inspection. Scattered specks do nothing to diminish the importance of this key date No Motto five. Population: 5 in 58 (1 in 58+), 1 finer (7/16).(Registry values: P8)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VS, PCGS# 8294, Greysheet# 8909)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
