1863 Half Eagle, AU Details
Only 30 to 40 Coins Survive

1863 $5 -- Tooled -- NCS. AU Details. Half eagle production fell to just 2,442 business strikes in the midst of fighting between the Union and the Confederacy. Gold coins simply did not circulate along the East coast during that period. Most of the five dollar gold pieces struck that year were probably exported and melted, leaving only 30 to 40 survivors today. This representative is sharply struck, with bold definition on the stars, curls, date, feathers, talons, and fletchings. The surfaces have been tooled to remove abrasions.
