Elusive Choice AU 1863-S Half Eagle
1863-S $5 AU55 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Even though 17,000 pieces were struck of the 1863-S, most of the surviving examples (of which there are surprisingly few) are well circulated. Akers said this issue is comparable to the 1863, with a business strike mintage of just 2,442 pieces, and is even scarcer in high grades. The surfaces are minimally abraded save for a vertical mark below the O in OF, and show an appealing reddish-coppery patina over each side. The striking details are generally strong except on the hair curls around Liberty's face. Population: 3 in 55, 1 finer (11/01).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VT, PCGS# 8295, Greysheet# 9041)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
