Description
Rare Near-Mint 1863-S Five Dollar
1863-S $5 AU58 NGC. Only one die variety is known, with a large S mintmark on the reverse that Walter Breen attributed as the "Reverse of 1856." A single known variety is unsurprising, given a mintage of only 17,000 coins. The obverse has some curious raised die lines behind LIBERTY, near the eye, on the neck, and on the bust, visible on several examples that we checked in our Permanent Auction Archives. They are reminiscent of those seen on the 1884-CC eagle, and may represent damage to the die during its long journey from Philadelphia to San Francisco. An attractive example, this half eagle has partly lustrous orange-gold surfaces that lack any obtrusive abrasions. Small marks are scattered, and the strike is precise. NGC has never graded a Mint State piece, and it is likely that the AU58 Census mostly comprises resubmissions.(Registry values: P7)
