Description

1864 Half Eagle, Sharply Defined AU53
A Low-Mintage, Rare Issue

1864 $5 AU53 NGC. Post-1861 half eagle mintages continued to be low through this decade, especially Philadelphia issues. The 1864 five saw a production of only 4,170 pieces. It is therefore not surprising that this date is rare in all grades. The PCGS website estimates only 75 to 100 examples are extant, and the two major services have certified a total of 90 pieces, only six of which are in Mint State, none finer than MS61.

This AU53 offering displays orange-gold surfaces with traces of luster in the protected areas. The design elements are sharply defined throughout even after accounting for high-point wear. Moreover, the few minuscule marks are undistracting. The most noticeable mark, a shallow scrape beneath OF, is singled out solely for pedigree purposes. Census: 6 in 53, 24 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P7)
