Description

1864 Half Eagle, AU55
Fewer Than 75 Pieces Known

1864 $5 AU55 NGC. The 1864 half eagle is a highly underrated rarity in virtually every grade. Production was limited to only 4,170 pieces, and those coins that were not eventually melted served extensively in circulation. Only 60 to 75 pieces are believed to survive, almost all in circulated condition. This Choice AU representative is pleasantly original with medium orange-gold patina and hints of luster remaining in the recesses. The strike is sharp and there is only minor wear over the high points of the design. A couple small planchet voids are seen at the back of Liberty's neck, not obvious without magnification. An appealing, high-end example of this challenging Philadelphia issue. Census: 11 in 55, 12 finer (4/15).(Registry values: P7)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VU, PCGS# 8296, Greysheet# 8910)

Weight: 8.36 grams
