Description

1864 Five Dollar, AU55
Scarce in All Grades

1864 $5 AU55 PCGS. The 1864 is a scarce, underrated Philadelphia half eagle, with a scant mintage of only 4,170 coins. It is believed that fewer than 75 pieces are extant in all grades, contradicting the inflated certified population data which show 94 submissions. Most surviving examples of this issue reside in XF or AU condition, and the date is extremely rare in bagmarked Mint State. As gold during this period did not circulate to a great extent on the East coast, lower-grade Fine or VF coins are about as rare as their Uncirculated counterparts. The present Choice AU coin is of the quality typically seen for the grade, but is nonetheless finer than the majority of the 1864 population. The motifs are well-struck and reveal minimal wear, while showing hints of luster throughout bright yellow-gold patina. A coppery alloy spot on the 8 in the date serves as a pedigree identifier. Population: 6 in 55, 4 finer (9/15).(Registry values: P7)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VU, PCGS# 8296, Greysheet# 8910)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
