Description

Seldom-Seen AU58 1864 Half Eagle

1864 $5 AU58 NGC. CAC. The mintage of the 1864 half eagle was so low -- 4,170 circulation strikes -- that even the Smithsonian Institution lacks an example. Gold was hoarded during the Civil War and produced in extremely small quantities by the Mint. This near-Mint State piece boasts appealing orange-gold luster and is well-struck, but shows a couple of small, undistracting struck-in patches of die grease on the obverse. An appealing coin. Census: 9 in 58, 4 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P7)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VU, PCGS# 8296, Greysheet# 8910)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
