Description

1864 Liberty Half Eagle, AU58+
Near the Condition Census
Only 60 to 75 Pieces Known

1864 $5 AU58+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 4,170 half eagles in 1864, and fewer than 75 pieces are believed extant in all grades, according to PCGS's estimate. Only a handful of Mint State coins are known. This is the sole Plus-designated AU58 coin at PCGS, and one of the top four pieces with CAC endorsement. Moderate luster remains in the protected areas of the fields, with rich orange-gold patina overall. Some scattered abrasions accompany the grade, including a reed mark in the field left of Liberty's nose, which serves as a reliable pedigree marker. Overall, a pleasing example of this rare, underappreciated Philadelphia issue. Population: 3 in 58 (1 in 58+), 2 finer. CAC: 4 in 58, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P7)
