Description

1864-S Half Eagle, XF45
A Pleasing Example of This Great Rarity

1864-S $5 XF45 PCGS. While all of the half eagle issues produced in San Francisco in the 1860s are scarce-to-rare, the 1864-S has the lowest mintage of them all (3,888 coins) and is also the rarest. This issue ranks among the scarcest No Motto fives from any of the U.S. mint facilities, including even the 1875 with its tiny mintage of 200 pieces.

This antique-gold and rose example is softly struck on the obverse stars, as well as the eagle's talons and arrow fletchings. A V-shaped scratch is noted on Liberty's neck, and a few other moderate marks from circulation are included on both sides. The major design elements remain essentially intact and are only mildly worn. Population: 1 in 45, 4 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P9)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VV, PCGS# 8297, Greysheet# 9042)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
