Description
1865 Five Dollar, AU50
Sought-After, Elusive Date
1865 $5 AU50 NGC. The paltry coinage of 1,270
business-strike half eagles produced in 1865, many of which were
apparently melted, translates into this issue being a major rarity.
This is evidenced by the meager population of 48 examples certified
by NGC and PCGS in all grades combined. Only five of these were
assigned a Mint State designation, and none are finer than MS61.
Reddish-gold patination cascades over both sides of this AU50
example, each of which exhibits well-struck design features. Only
the leg feathers and the arrow feathers are a tad ill-defined.
Distributed small marks are visible on the obverse. Census: 3 in
50, 18 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P8)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VW, PCGS# 8298, GSID# 8911)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.24188oz
