Description

1865 Half Eagle, AU53
Only 1,270 Examples Struck

1865 $5 AU53 NGC. The Philadelphia mintage of the $5 Liberty Head gold pieces consisted of a mere 1,270 coins as opposed to the San Francisco issue of 27,612 pieces in 1865, the final year of the Civil War. Coins were hoarded during the war years rather than circulated and many coins ended up in the melting pot. Despite the comparably large San Francisco production, surviving examples from that issue are rare in all grades as well.

This lightly circulated Philadelphia example exhibits wear on the high points. The surfaces reveal large splashes of appealing orange-gold color, with areas of luster remaining. Though marks are present as expected, none are worthy of mention. Census: 4 in 53, 14 finer (11/13).
