Description
1865 Five Dollar Liberty, AU53
High-End CAC-Approved Example
Near the Condition Census
1865 $5 AU53 PCGS. CAC. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Deep
original patina envelops this AU 1865 half eagle in old-time
orange-gold and olive patina, with hints of luster remaining in the
protected areas and mostly minor abrasions throughout. A linear
mark beneath star 8 will serve as a pedigree marker, but other
surface chatter is as expected for the issue. The 1865 is a rare and underappreciated rarity from the Philadelphia Mint. Just 1,295 pieces were struck, and PCGS estimates a survivorship of merely 30 to 40 coins. In our experience, this survival estimate is likely correct. We have seen only 31 offerings of the date, including some duplications of individual coins. The issue is nearly uncollectible in Mint State, and merely a handful of AU or better pieces are CAC endorsed. This example is outstanding offering for the most advanced Liberty half eagle specialist. Population: 5 in 53, 8 finer. CAC: 3 in 53, 1 finer (11/24).
