Description
Exceptionally Rare Choice About Uncirculated 1865 Liberty Five
1865 $5 AU55 NGC. Since gold specie payments were suspended at the end of 1861, it is little wonder that the Philadelphia Mint limited Half Eagle production during the latter years of the Civil War. In 1865, the final year of the war, only 1,295 pieces were produced, a mintage figure that is the fifth lowest in the entire 1795-1929 Half Eagle series. Those few coins that survived the rampant exportation and melting of the era typically grade VF or XF, and Breen notes that this date is "prohibitively rare above [those grades]."This is the first Choice AU 1865 Half Eagle that we have offered in recent memory. Both sides retain ample evidence of a semi-prooflike finish with considerable brightness in the fields. The devices are boldly, if not sharply detailed with only minimal wear across the highpoints. The otherwise olive-gold color warms to reddish-gold shades on the reverse. The fields are a little scuffy from circulation, but the only useful pedigree markers are a group of small scrapes in the reverse field above the E in FIVE. An obviously important offering for the advanced gold collector. Population: 2 in 55, 7 finer (7/02).
