Description
PCGS 1865 AU 53. An extremely rare date in the half eagle series with a mintage of only 1,270 business strikes. With such a miniscule production it comes as no surprise that AU coins are rare. Indeed, '65 half eagles are rare in any grade. This piece is the second finest certified, being bettered only by an NGC MS 61. Well struck in most areas, there is a slight overlay of reddish color in the fields. For pedigree purposes, there is a near vertical scratch on the neck of Liberty and small chatter in the left obverse field. An extremely important offering of this rarely seen Civil War issue. Trends $6,100 in AU 50.
