1865-S $5 AU55 NGC. The 1865-S Liberty half eagle claims a low mintage of 27,612 pieces, making it an elusive issue, especially in high grade. In fact, before a few high-quality examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Brother Jonathan, the 1865-S was unknown in Mint State. This attractive Choice AU specimen offers well-detailed, lightly worn design elements and lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces. Census: 17 in 55, 14 finer (1/18).(Registry values: P7)
