Description

1865-S Five Dollar, MS61
Tied for Finest at NGC
A Major Rarity in Mint State

1865-S $5 MS61 NGC. The 1865-S is sometimes overlooked among the many rare S-mint half eagles from the 1850s and 1860s. It is thought fewer than 100 examples survive in all grades combined from the 27,612-piece mintage. Only about eight pieces are known in any Mint State grade -- most of those concentrated at the MS60 and MS61 levels. This is a particularly attractive MS61 example featuring an unusually sharp strike for the issue and opulent orange-gold color. A few widely scattered tiny ticks exist as might be expected for the assigned grade, yet there are no significant abrasions or distracting marks. Smooth, satinlike mint luster glows from each side. NGC Census: 5 in 61, 0 finer (5/25).(Registry values: P7)
