Description
1866 With Motto Five Dollar, AU50
Important Condition Rarity
1866 $5 AU50 PCGS. The 1866 is important not only as the
first year of the With Motto reverse, but it is also a rarity in
its own right. Only 6,700 pieces were struck and the usually seen
piece is VF-XF. AU examples, such as this one are decidedly scarce
and the handful of Uncirculated coins that have been certified are
prohibitively rare. Most AU coins show prooflike fields, and this
one has subdued reflectivity from slight handling while in
circulation. The striking details are strong throughout and there
are small, inoffensive abrasions scattered over each side that are
consistent with the grade.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VZ, PCGS# 8311, GSID# 8912)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
