1866-S Motto Five Dollar, Choice XF
Exceptional Color and Appeal

1866-S $5 Motto XF45 NGC. The San Francisco Mint struck 9,000 No Motto half eagles in 1866, and then 34,920 With Motto coins. Both issues are scarce today, with fewer than 100 examples of each known. This upper-end With Motto coin displays bold detail and original olive-gold coloration with lilac and reddish hues throughout. A linear mark in the field above star 13 is the only mentionable abrasion. Census: 11 in 45, 14 finer (2/18).
