Rare AU 1866-S No Motto Half Eagle

1866-S $5 No Motto AU53 NGC. For the twenty year period between 1858 and 1877, the San Francisco Mint struck only small numbers of Half Eagles each year, since the more convenient Double Eagle was preferred by bankers and exporters. In 1866, just 43,920 pieces were coined, a typical emission for the era. However, all but 9,000 of these pieces bore the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the upper reverse field. The No Motto pieces were struck in the first part of the year, before San Francisco received the new reverse dies. A nicely struck example, the eagle's claws and the curl beneath Liberty's ear has not received a full blow from the dies. Relatively unabraded, although a fully retained lamination is noticeable left of Liberty's eye. Luster percolates across protected areas. Population: 1 in 53, 7 finer (1/05).(#8300) (Registry values: P8)
