Description

1866-S No Motto Five, AU58
None Finer at NGC

1866-S $5 No Motto AU58 NGC. This is a challenging transitional year half eagle, although not holding a significant advantage in overall rarity when compared to its higher-mintage With Motto counterpart. Just 9,000 No Motto pieces were issued and the average survivor is heavily worn, often grading XF 40 or lower. Only one Mint State piece has been certified by either major service (at PCGS), promoting this bright-gold example to Condition Census consideration for the issue. Both sides are well-struck and display ample luster in the recesses. Census: 6 in 58, 0 finer (12/24).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2004), lot 7562.(Registry values: P8)
