None Finer at NGC
1866-S $5 No Motto AU58 NGC. This is a challenging
transitional year half eagle, although not holding a significant
advantage in overall rarity when compared to its higher-mintage
With Motto counterpart. Just 9,000 No Motto pieces were issued and
the average survivor is heavily worn, often grading XF 40 or lower.
Only one Mint State piece has been certified by either major
service (at PCGS), promoting this bright-gold example to Condition
Census consideration for the issue. Both sides are well-struck and
display ample luster in the recesses. Census: 6 in 58, 0 finer
