Description
Eye-Appealing 1867 Half Eagle, AU53
Ex: 1969 Merkin Auction
1867 $5 AU53 NGC. Both the Seated Liberty dime and quarter
issues as well as the smaller-denomination gold coins saw small
mintages in this Reconstruction Era year, 6,870 pieces in the case
of the half eagle. The average grade of certified survivors is
Choice XF to AU, so this piece is slightly better than most graded
examples. The eye appeal is excellent, however, with a few
scattered marks on each side consistent with a short spell in
commerce. The rich orange-gold color and decent strike are also
pluses. Census: 11 in 53, 17 finer (10/12).Ex: Lester Merkin (3/1969), lot 306, where it brought $40, flip accompanies.(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W3, PCGS# 8313, Greysheet# 8913)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
