1867 Half Eagle, Sharply Struck AU55
A Conditionally Rare Issue
1867 $5 AU55 NGC. NGC and PCGS have graded only 91 half
eagles from the Philadelphia Mint bearing the date 1867 that came
from a mintage of 6,870 pieces. The majority of these grade from
Very Fine to the lower levels of About Uncirculated. AU55 and AU58
pieces account for 19 pieces in the population, and a mere two
Uncirculated pieces are known. The reddish-gold surfaces of this
Choice AU offering display traces of luster in the recesses, and
the design elements are uniformly sharply struck, with just the
eagle showing minor softness. The few minute marks are unobtrusive
and undistracting. This piece yields great overall eye appeal.
