Description

1867 Half Eagle, Sharply Struck AU55
A Conditionally Rare Issue

1867 $5 AU55 NGC. NGC and PCGS have graded only 91 half eagles from the Philadelphia Mint bearing the date 1867 that came from a mintage of 6,870 pieces. The majority of these grade from Very Fine to the lower levels of About Uncirculated. AU55 and AU58 pieces account for 19 pieces in the population, and a mere two Uncirculated pieces are known. The reddish-gold surfaces of this Choice AU offering display traces of luster in the recesses, and the design elements are uniformly sharply struck, with just the eagle showing minor softness. The few minute marks are unobtrusive and undistracting. This piece yields great overall eye appeal. Census: 7 in 55, 8 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)
