    Description

Prooflike Borderline Uncirculated 1867 Half Eagle

1867 $5 AU58 PCGS. This well struck With Motto Half Eagle has little evidence of highpoint friction, and despite minor handling marks to be expected of the grade, there are no undesirable abrasions. Although not designated as such on the PCGS holder, the fields are moderately reflective and rather prooflike. The Bass sale cataloger stated that this piece "has every appearance of a proof and may have been struck in such a manner." A mere 6,870 pieces were struck, a mostly token production since gold coins did not circulate during this era and Double Eagles were the denomination of choice for export. Population: 5 in 58, 1 finer (3/04).
    Ex: ANA Sale (Paramount, 8/69), lot 1972; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part III (5/00), lot 504.(#8313) (NGC ID# 25W3, PCGS# 8313)
