    Description

    1868-S Five Dollar, Choice AU
    Far Above Average Example

1868-S $5 AU55 NGC. This scarce issue saw immediate circulation of its emission of 52,000 pieces, like so many other S-mint coins in the coinage-starved West, and survivors are scarce in XF or higher grades. Much luster emanates from underneath the copper-gold and sunset-orange surfaces. This example shows weakness on Liberty's lowest hair curl, and on the fletchings, the right (facing) claw, and the eagle's neck. But there are few remarkable abrasions, and the overall eye appeal is high. Census: 16 in 55, 11 finer (10/12).
